There are various risks of handling a muscle strain. You must follow dosage instructions on all prescription or over-the-counter medications. Use a barrier such as a towel between an ice pack and your skin. Let your skin to warm up in between icing intervals. Surgery to repair a torn muscle carries a few risks such as bleeding, blood clots, infection, pain and stiffness.

The last thing you want to do is reinjure a strained muscle. There are numerous ways you can avoid a muscle strain from happening again, such as allowing lots of time to heal from an injury, stretching your muscles every day, cross-training for sports by weightlifting or choosing another movement to strengthen your muscles, warming up before exercise or intense activity, eating foods that is high in potassium, such as bananas and avocados, before exercise to prevent muscle fatigue and finally hydrating yourself during exercise.

You should speak to your doctor about what steps you can take to avoid muscle strains if you experience them often. If you have a muscle tear that involves surgery, medication or physical therapy can be recommended after your procedure. Your doctor will advise you on specific follow-up instructions based on the type and severity of your injury.
