Know if Physiotherapy Helps in Curing Tendinopathy or Tendinitis

The terms ‘Tendinopathy’ or ‘Tendonitis’ can baffle you if you are not from the medical background. It is natural to get confused, and you might even freak out if your doctor tells you that you are suffering from these! But worry not, as these injuries can get cured with simple physiotherapy! Tendonitis or Tendinopathy are injuries occurring in the tendons of your body. Though it might happen in any area, mostly these are common in the musculotendinous junction (joining of the tendon with the muscle), in the mid-tendon or there might be tendon insertion in the bone.

When there are repetitive strains on the tendons, you suffer from an injury. Mostly affecting the ankle, elbow, knee or shoulder, a tendon injury can stop your injured part from functioning altogether. You will hear your health expert using the term ‘Tendonitis’ when there is an inflammation in the tendons. In the case of ‘Tendinosis’, your body will be in pain. When overloading leads to the degeneration of collagen in the tendon, this noninflammatory condition occurs. These do not respond to anti-inflammatory treatments, but functional rehabilitation helps and can be completely cured with the right diagnosis in the early stage.

Phases of Tendinopathy

There are four phases for Tendinopathy. While your affected area might function normally in the first phase, overloading from the second phase onwards might lead to tendon rupture or tendon cell death.

1. Reactive Tendinopathy

This is a general tissue adaptation phase and can be recovered from quite quickly.

2. Tendon Disrepair

There is an attempt for the tissue to heal in this phase, and you must prevent any further deterioration as that might lead to cell death permanently.

3. Degenerative Tendinopathy

The cells are already dead, and the tendon cells are getting poorer with each passing minute!

4. Tendon Rupture

Surgery is the only option if you want to recover from this stage as there are a mass tissue breakdown and complete loss of function.

Contribution of Physiotherapy in Tendinopathy

In whatever stage you are in, the first thing your doctor will ask you to do is hire a physiotherapist for regular sessions. In the case of reactive tendinopathy, your physiotherapist will ask you to rest and not excite your tendons in any way. He will make sure that you are not indulging excessively in work and will slowly push you to your normal state. However, in tendinosis, he starts a rehab program with a set of exercises. If there are weaknesses in other parts of the muscle or if you have using been using wrong shoes while exercising, he corrects those mistakes first.

Hence, you understand the importance of a physiotherapist when it comes to a tendon injury. Get in touch with your trusted physiotherapist for a full-time session of workout in order to return to your normal activity.
