Understanding, Managing, and Recovering from Sprained Ankles

Understanding, Managing, and Recovering from Sprained Ankles

At Southgate Physio Clinic, we frequently encounter patients whose lives have been momentarily disrupted by an ankle injury. Although it is a common musculoskeletal ailment that we treat, that doesn’t make the disruption or discomfort that those who have it experience any less intense. We’ll discuss what a sprained ankle is in today’s blog post, how Southgate treats them, and what steps you may take to get better.

What is a Sprained Ankle?

When the ligaments that support the ankle are overextended and torn, this results in a sprained ankle. This can occur in a number of ways, including falling or twisting your ankle awkwardly while playing sports. An ankle sprain can cause anything from a slight ligament tear to a total rupture.

Signs of a Sprained Ankle

Here are some signs that you may have sprained your ankle:

  • Pain, particularly when you bear weight on it
  • Tenderness when you touch the ankle
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Restricted range of motion
  • Instability in the ankle

Southgate’s Approach to Ankle Sprains

What to anticipate when you come to see us with a sprained ankle is as follows:

Assessment: After learning about the incident that led to your sprain, your symptoms, and your medical background, our physiotherapists will determine how severe it is. If a significant sprain or fracture is suspected, a physical examination and maybe an X-ray, MRI, or ultrasound scan may be added to this. Southgate Physio also offers POCUS (point of care ultrasound scan).

Personalised Treatment Plan: Based on your assessment, we’ll design a tailored treatment plan. This could involve a combination of rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE), pain-relief medication, physiotherapy, and in some severe cases, referral for surgical consultation.

Physiotherapy: Our physiotherapists will lead you through a series of exercises to strengthen, stretch, and balance your ankle. This will hasten your recovery and lower your risk of recurrent sprains.

Education: We think that knowledge is a useful instrument for preventing injuries. You’ll learn how the ankle functions, why injuries happen, and how to prevent them.
