EXHIBITION

If you have a sports injury, you may not have to undergo surgery as treatment. There are various methods that can treat your injury without the involvement of a surgical procedure. Some of these methods may even be a better option for the injury.

Some of the non-surgical options for sports injuries are as follows:

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is a good alternative to surgery for minimalising pain and helping to treat the injury. Your physiotherapist will create an individual program by looking at your injury and your specific needs. Along with your physiotherapist you will develop goals to reduce pain and reach recovery.

Physical therapy will both build strength and decrease pain in the muscles, tendons and ligaments. Your range of motion, flexibility and endurance in the area will also be improved in the process.

Fitness machines, resistance bikes, treadmills and whirlpools as well as ultrasound and electrical stimulation can be used to treat injuries and build soft tissue.

Medication

Another non-invasive procedure for treating the pain of an injury is medication. You may be prescribed something or recommended steroid or cortisone injections for the inflammation. You may also be advised to get over-the-counter pain killers or medication for numbing to relieve any pain the sports injury is causing.

These medications may be prescribed alongside another form of treatment such as physiotherapy or daily exercise.

Daily exercise

Similarly to physical therapy, daily exercise is a good option for helping to strengthen the muscles and improve your overall health. Managing your weight and overall health will minimise the stress that you could put on your injury. Exercising will also build stronger muscles around the joints, increase flexibility and minimalise inflammation.

Doing cardiovascular exercises everyday can aid in decreasing any pain concerning your sports injury and if done regularly can help to treat it.

Daily Exercises

Bracing or casting

Using a cast or brace may aid the treatment of your sports injury, allowing it to rest instead of being used which may cause more pain. An injury such as fracture may be helped without surgery; by securing it in a brace or cast and using crutches to keep weight off of it, this will aid in its healing.

By visiting a physician, you will be able to conclude whether or not a surgical procedure is needed or if there are other options. The physician will be able to determine the best option for treating your sports injury. Where possible, a physician will try to treat your injury without surgery however sometimes it is required.
