What Causes Back Pain and How Can You Prevent It?

Back pain happens to be one of the main reasons why people miss work or go to the doctor. It is the leading cause of disability globally and most people suffer from it at least once in their lifetime. But what causes this problem, and what measures can you take to prevent or get back pain relief? Find out below.

Origin of Back Pain

• Muscle or Ligament Strain
A sudden movement or continuous heavy lifting can strain muscles in the back and spinal ligaments. Also, if you are in poor physical condition, continuous strain on your back can generate painful muscle spasms.

• Ruptured or Bulging Disks
Disks work as cushions between the bones in one’s spine. However, the soft material within a disk can rupture or bulge and press on a nerve, thus leaving you in serious pain. At times, this disk issue is identified incidentally while performing spine MRIs for some other reason.

• Arthritis
Osteoarthritis is one of the many low back pain causes. This happens from the wear and tear of the facet joints and discs. Osteoarthritis can lead to pain, instability, inflammation, and also stenosis to a variable degree.

• Spinal Stenosis
At times, spinal arthritis can cause narrowing of the space around your spinal cord. This condition is known as spinal stenosis, and the narrowing can be foraminal, central, or both. Spinal Stenosis can either be at a single level or multiple levels in your lower back.

Back Pain Physiotherapy

How Do You Deal With Back Pain?

• Exercise
You must indulge in low-impact aerobic exercises like swimming and walking which do not jolt or strain your back. They can enhance strength and endurance in your back and allow the muscles to work better. Consult a physiotherapist and talk with them about the possible activities.

• Develop Muscle Strength and Flexibility
Back muscle and abdominal exercises strengthen your core and condition these muscles which then function together as a natural corset for your back. A physiotherapy professional can recommend the right physiotherapy exercises for lower back pain.

• Ice/Heat Therapy
You can use ice packs to get relief from the discomfort and reduce inflammation in acute back pain phases. But remember, do not apply the ice directly to your skin. You may wrap it in thin towel to prevent skin damage.

Warm compresses can also alleviate your back pain after inflammation has subsided. You may consider alternating between cold and heat therapy. For back pain treatment at home, ice/heat therapy is a great choice.

• Salt Baths
A hot bath happens to be a great option in this case. It can do wonders for your aching muscles. Just add some Epsom salt in the water. Your body will absorb the minerals from the bath which will then help ease the aching muscles.

Get in touch with a prominent physio for lower back pain and take their help to manage this problem better.
