Foot Strengthening Exercises from Professional Physiotherapists

Foot health and strength are essential for general mobility and well-being. For individuals who engage in physical activities or spend a lot of time standing, preserving foot strength can mitigate risks and improve overall efficacy. Our skilled physiotherapists at Southgate Physio provide a variety of exercises made especially to strengthen your feet. These are some of the best foot exercises you can do to strengthen and fortify your feet.

1. Toe Curls

Goal: Build stronger the muscles in your lower limbs.

How to Carry Out:
With your feet flat on the floor, take a seat in a chair.
A little towel should be placed on the ground in front of you.
Curl the towel in your direction with your toes.
Ten to fifteen times for every foot.

2. Heel Raises

Goals: Fortifies the Achilles tendon and the calf muscles.

How to Carry Out:
Maintain a hip-width distance between your feet while steadying yourself with a chair or wall.
Elevate your heels gradually while maintaining a toe-like stance.
After a little period of holding, bring your heels back down.
Ten to fifteen times, repeat.

3. Arch Lifts

Goals:  To strengthen the muscles supporting the arches and enhance foot stability.

How to Carry Out:
Place your feet flat on the ground when you sit.
Without pointing your toes or shifting your heel, gently raise the arch of your foot.
Hold for a short while before letting go.
Ten to fifteen times for every foot.

4. Toe Spread and Press

Goals: Develop the little muscles that run between your toes.

How to Carry Out:
Place your feet flat on the ground when you sit.
As much as you can, spread your toes.
After a little period of holding, firmly squeeze your toes together.
Ten to fifteen times, repeat.

5. Resistance Band Foot Flex

Goals: Increases ankle flexibility and strengthens the muscles in the front of your lower leg.

How to Carry Out:
Stretch your legs out in front of you while you sit.
Hold the ends of a resistance band as you loop it around the ball of your foot.
Point your toes away and gently pull the band towards you.
Hold for a short while before letting go.
Ten to fifteen times for every foot.

6. Calf Stretch

Goal: Increases calf and Achilles tendon flexibility.

How to Carry Out:
Place your hands on the wall for support while you stand facing the wall.
Bend your front knee and take one straight step back.
Until your calf starts to stretch, firmly plant your rear heel on the ground.
After 20 to 30 seconds of holding, switch sides.
Do each leg two to three times.

7. Toe Yoga

Goal: Improves the coordination and strength of the toes.

How to Carry Out:
Place your feet flat on the ground when you sit.
Keeping the other toes on the ground, raise your big toe.
Then, while keeping the big toe down, raise the other four toes.
